Art takes on many forms and I find my creative outlet in motivational speaking. My speaking style started to gain attention with my teammates and coaches. My high school coach recognized my ability to inspire, and that gift carried me through as I went on to play football both in college and professionally in The Canadian League. I found my voice as an athlete.
Ever since then, I’ve accepted speaking engagements from various organizations and churches, opening the door for me to step into my passion for public speaking. Embracing the opportunity to share my stories and accepting these requests became a way for me to put my gift into action. I found fulfillment in reaching diverse audiences and making a positive impact.
As I discern members of my audiences, I tailor my messages to allow my creative outlet, whether professional or community, to progress and resonate deeper with my listeners. I’ve spoken at Synovus and other companies while addressing business leaders about teamwork, unity, and the sacrifice for the greater good. As a speaker at a large Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast in Columbus, Georgia, I had the honor of emphasizing the importance of togetherness and teamwork between different cities and organizations, continuing the message of togetherness that Dr. King fought for during the Civil Rights Movement.
As the first black mayor of Phenix City, Alabama, speaking at events like the Phenix City Mayor's Ball, I was able to continue sharing my speaking and storytelling with attendees. One could argue that it was the honing of my communication skills that helped get me elected mayor of Phenix City. I was able to connect with members of my community and assure them that I understood their concerns and would make decisions and keep their needs in mind.
By encouraging and promoting unity through my support of Black artists and creators, a personal goal is to contribute to the success and recognition of Black talent. If I can offer advice to any aspiring artists, it would be to be your authentic self. Authenticity is key, and there's no substitute for sincerity. Being true to oneself and embracing individuality is essential to any creative pursuit.
