Kathryn Arana – Colombia
During Hispanic Heritage Month, I reflect on my Colombian roots that have shaped my identity and experiences. I was raised in New Jersey, but my Colombian family instilled in me a deep connection to our homeland. One vivid memory of my Colombian upbringing is waking up to the comforting smell of my mom's homemade arepas (a staple made from corn flour and cheese), served alongside a steaming cup of cafecito (coffee).
I lived in Colombia when I was a teenager, which deepened my respect for the culture and developed my language skills. Exploring the lush mountains, varied terrains and distinct climates an hour from Bogotá opened a world of natural beauty and changing seasons that I had never experienced before. Whether soaking in the summer sun or enjoying the chill of winter, each moment was a reminder of what makes Colombia special.
Looking back, I am grateful for the opportunity to have lived in Colombia and for the lessons I learned. The memories of exploring new foods, experiencing different landscapes and connecting with the vibrant Colombian culture are treasures that I hold dear.
My Colombian heritage has shaped my perspective on life and instilled in me a profound appreciation for the diverse tapestry of traditions and experiences that define Hispanic culture. I'm proud to share my heritage, like this photo where I proudly wear a ruana (a Colombian poncho-like garment) adorned with the colors of the Colombian flag and the iconic vueltiao (a Colombian hat.)
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
