Rudy Sosa-Febo – Puerto Rico
As a Puerto Rican native, some of my most cherished childhood memories revolve around family’s holiday traditions, especially during Christmas time. I also treasure our family trips to el yunque (the rainforest) and the beautiful beaches, and the fond memories of watching my father and bothers playing baseball. My father played Class A and Double A baseball in Puerto Rico and my bother went on to play college baseball in Kansas City and South Dakota.
In Puerto Rico, sports plays a significant role in our daily lives. We embrace sports as a way of connecting with our culture, promoting health and wellness, and fostering a sense of community. Baseball is a national passion. Major League Baseball hall of famers such as Roberto Clemente, Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez and Roberto Alomar call Puerto Rico home.
Boxing also has a storied history in Puerto Rico, producing world champions and hosting major boxing events. Tito Trinidad and Miguel Cotto are boxers that achieved great success, becoming beloved figures in Puerto Rico and for boxers everywhere.
If I had to choose one of these legendary players as a favorite, I would have to say Roberto Clemente. Not only was he a legendary baseball player, but he was also dedicated to humanitarian work and focused on helping others, especially those in need. Tragically, he died in a plane crash on December 31, 1972, while en route to deliver aid and support to Nicaragua’s earthquake victims.
I’m deeply proud of my Puerto Rican heritage and love sharing what makes it special. I get energized by listening to Hispanic music before I come to work, and I like to learn about what’s happening in the Central Florida Hispanic community. I’m also passionate about passing Hispanic culture along to my daughter by speaking Spanish at home and feeding her Puerto Rican and Dominican food, as she is half Dominican. It’s an honor to share our heritage!
