When we asked Kayla if she celebrated Pride Month, her response was one that represents the joy and purpose she feels when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community. “I celebrate Pride every day with someone special,” she said.
Whether she’s supporting them in business or friendship, Kayla feels honored to have several friends and family members who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. “I know this may seem a bit cliché,” she shared, “but we have a lot of people in the LBGTQ+ spectrum in our family. And my friends are like family, so in my mind, it’s always celebrated.”
For Kayla, the act of observing and participating in Pride Month is an outward sign to every community that greatness comes when we embrace what makes us different. And while Pride Month is a perfect time to celebrate uniqueness, she feels it’s important to always recognize what makes us special.
“When Pride Month is over, we can still celebrate one another every day, just by being ourselves. Pride is a time to reflect on how far we have come on the path to progress, and how far we still have to go for equality and acceptance. Each day we get a bit closer to being better than we were before.”
Kayla acknowledges that it takes time and effort to reach acceptance. She encourages people both inside and outside the LGBTQ+ community and corporations to be open to listening, and to embrace the struggles that people face with respect and appreciation. “Be open to learning and be open to loving everyone for the content of their character instead of who they love,” she recommends. “Hear the stories that people have to tell and what their journey has meant to them.”
And when Pride month ends, Kayla assures us that she remains a safe place of acceptance and encouragement for members of the community. “I feel, like many of us probably feel, that we need a voice and need to not feel erased,” she said. “I’m always a huge advocate of celebrating life and embracing others with understanding and support.” She proudly attends Pride parades and other social events, anxiety willing.
“I try to be there,” she says. “To just show up. We all matter and no one should ever feel like who they are needs to be muted.”
