Kevin Gillen
Market Executive | Synovus DEI Leadership Board, Sarasota, FL
Kevin has always had a knack for building relationships. So, he didn’t think twice about striking up a working friendship with Michele LarMoore, a woman of color and former co-worker. Little did he know that he was getting to know someone who would inspire him for years.
Michele is a single mom and works full-time. She showed Kevin how any obstacle is an opportunity if approached with perspective and grit. He’s proud to share that her son grew up to be a fine young man currently serving our country in the military. Given the mother he has, Kevin isn’t surprised Michele’s son chose a life of duty and honor.
She taught Kevin that “Awareness, compassion, and listening to others help build perspective and strengthen one’s ability to cope. Everyone has a life story. If you listen, you’ll learn and expand your ability to take on the challenging times.”
His friendship with Michele has served as a constant reminder that having a plan and the ability to adapt and pivot according to what life throws your way is vital to success. But also that awareness, compassion, and being a good listener help you move through life with perspective and shared strength from loved ones.
Kevin often uses these words to find perspective and strength when times are hard:
- See obstacles as growth opportunities.
- Don’t go through life alone. Lean on friends, family, and colleagues.
- Always bring your personal best.
